Ekaterina Zaharieva: Our foreign policy must have an economic focus

The HC of Republic of Mauritius to Bulgaria, Dr Christo Iliev, as Board Member of the Association of Honorary Consuls, meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva.

At the meeting Minister Zaharieva discussed the possibilities for working together in the sphere of international and economic relations of our country. "Bulgarian foreign policy must be economically oriented. For all ambassadors, I say that our country´s economy is a top priority. This can be done through culture and tourism, which would contribute to the development of the Bulgarian business, "said our foreign minister.

Minister Zaharieva supports the idea of creation of a Honorary Consulate of Bulgaria in Mauritius as a mean of better facilitating the potential of our economies and bilateral communication.

Ekaterina Zaharieva pointed out that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working hard to improve the visa services in order not to suffer the Bulgarian business. "We are expanding the visa centers in Russia to more than 50, in China - to over 15, in India since March we will have exported visa centers, and Vietnam is under negotiations at the moment," the minister said.

Ekaterina Zaharieva informed the leadership of the Association of Honorary Consuls that at the initiative of the Ministry in October a meeting of all Honorary Consuls representing Bulgaria will be organized. Such a forum would contribute to attracting investment to Bulgaria. "I think Honorary Consuls can do a great job and they do it. I am grateful to many honorable consuls for the support of the development of the Bulgarian business, "said Minister Zaharieva.

The HC of Republic of Mauritius to Bulgaria, Dr Christo Iliev, as Board Member of the Association of Honorary Consuls, was host to Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev yesterday in Sofia to discuss the possibilities for working together to develop the international and economic relations of our country. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev was also present at the meeting.

Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev presented details of the foreign economic policy of the government. He stressed the important role of Honorary Consuls accredited in Bulgaria in foreign countries for the development of our country´s international relations, the improvement of the business environment and the attraction of foreign investments. In details to the guests were explained the activities of the Association and the readiness to work even more deeply in partnership with both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other institutions.

The African countries accredited in Bulgaria - South Africa, Sudan, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Palestine and the Honorary Consuls of Mauritius, Seychelles and Guinea marked Africa Day in Bulgaria with a celebration on 26 May 2018, at the City Garden (National Theatre Ivan Vazov Garden) in Sofia. The theme of the celebration was “Africa in Bulgaria” and the programme included African songs and dances, sale of African food, clothing and jewellery, story-telling and drumming.

Africa Day was officially opened at 11:00 hours by Ms Iliana Iotova, Vice-President of the Republic of Bulgaria, by Mr Petko Draganov, Director General of Political Affairs General Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and HE MsVanessa Calvert Ambassador of South Africa to Bulgaria and Dean of the African Group.

Africa Day 2018 marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the Organization of African Unity, later changed to African Union, the main aim of which are securing peace on the continent, developing democracy and respecting human rights and freedoms.

HC Mauritius presented the rich culture, high-class tourism and vast business possibilities in the country, ranked highest in Africa for Democracy, Economic and Sustainable development. Kids had the chance to touch the sand and corals from the Mauritius coasts and their parents to try traditional Mauritius rum.

Discussed was closer cooperation through signing of MOU between the countries, with the rising interest in the last years.

12-member Delegation of the Mauritius Boxing Federation participating in the 69th edition of the oldest format in Europe – the International Strandja Boxing Competition in Bulgaria. The team shall attend two training camps in Bulgaria and compete with over 34 nations in the prestigious tournament 19-25 February 2018y. The HC in Sofia is happy to welcome them and hopes for medals!

HC Dr.Christo Iliev, as Board Member to the Association of the Honorary Consuls in Bulgaria, participated in the International Conference on the 27th September 2017, which gathered Ambassadors, Ministers and specialists in support of the Bulgarian EU Presidency in the first half of 2018y, to be actively explored as open forum to enhance possibilities between Bulgaria - EU Members, as the stronger collaboration with diverse and progressive countries as Mauritius.

Лиляна Павлова каза още, че европредседателството ни трябва да бъде не само българско, а и балканско. На конференцията бяха обсъдени важни теми за външната политика на България, като културната дипломация, миграцията и прилагането на антитерористични мерки.

„Основната дейност на Почетните консули цели както развитието на търговските и икономическите връзки, така и обогатяването на културните и научните отношения между страните. Консулите са ценен дипломатически ресурс и се превръщат в активен инструмент на двустранната външна политика“ – каза Борислав Боянов, президент на Асоциацията и Почетен консул на Република Малта.

Други специални гости, които взеха участие в международната конференция и споделиха професионалния си опит, бяха Соломон Паси – български политик и бивш министър на външните работи, Н.Пр. проф. Григориос Василоконстандакис – посланик на Гърция за България, и Н.Пр. проф. Лино Бианко – Посланик на Малта в България и Румъния.

12 септември 2017 г., София. Асоциацията на Почетните консули в България представи официално Борда на директорите и ролята на Почетните консули в контекста на развиващите се международни отношения на пресконференция днес. Специален акцент бе и темата за българското европредседателство и подкрепата на Асоциацията за страната ни в това ново и значимо начинание.

Темата ще бъде разгърната и дискутирана в детайли и по време на предстоящата на 27 септември международна конференция, организирана от Асоциацията, на която ще се разискват въпроси за външната политика на България. В нея са заявили участие представители на дипломатическия корпус, министри, експерти и неправителствени организации.

„Ситуацията, в която се намира Европа в момента, е много динамична. Ето защо Почетните консули са ключови фигури за развитието на политическите, икономическите, социалните и културни връзки между държавите членки на ЕС, но и между страните извън него“ – каза Борислав Боянов, председател на Асоциацията и Почетен консул на Република Малта.

Сред актуалните теми на пресконференцията бе и ролята на Почетните консули за справяне с проблема с миграцията и прилагането на антитерористични мерки в България. Сигурността и миграцията са приоритети за европредседателството на страната ни през 2018 г.

„Работата ни в подкрепа на България по време на европредседателството е огромен шанс за развиване имиджа на страната ни както като туристическа дестинация, така и като държава с огромен потенциал за бъдещи инвестиции“ – сподели Максим Бехар, Генерален консул на Република Сейшели и говорител на Асоциацията.

В пресконференцията взеха участие още Ивайло Дерменджиев – Почетен консул на Кения,  д-р Христо Илиев – Почетен консул на Република Мавриций, проф. Красимир Методиев – Почетен консул на Израел, и Борислав Сарандев –  Почетен консул на Шри Ланка. Те споделиха ценен опит от практиката си, свързан с изграждането на дълготрайни и ползотворни връзки между представляваните от тях страни и българската държава.

Honorary Consul of Mauritius to Sofia H.E. Dr Christo Iliev was invited in Berlin on 07 April 2017, on behalf of H.E. Assoc. Prof Dr Jankee, Ambassador of Mauritius to Germany, together with the Diplomatic Staff and the Honorary Consuls of Mauritius based in Germany and the countries to which the Mission is accredited, in the bi-annual General Meeting of the Honorary Consuls.

The Meeting gave the possibility for the Consuls to receive up-to-date information on the Foreign Policies of Mauritius as well as the Economic development of the country. Mutual initiatives and events were mapped out. Special guest was the Director of Enterprise Mauritius and his team, with whom HC Dr Iliev agreed closer collaboration of the Honorary Consulate in Bulgaria for future export promotion initiatives by Enterprise Mauritius with aim to consolidate and increase bilateral trade and investment.

Over 40 Tourist Operators from all over Bulgaria met with their counterparties from Mauritius in Sofia in one of the best hotels, as part of the Roadshow of the Vanilla Islands organization. This gave incredible opportunity for the tourist professionals to meet in person and work closer for a greater recognition of Mauritius as tourist destination. Due to the personal involvement of HC Christo Iliev and the talks held in November 2016 in Mauritius, Bulgaria was included in the destinations of this year’s roadshow. The Event had vast media coverage and interest.
