MAURITIUS LAUNCHES ITS COVID-19 VACCINATION PROGRAMME

Port Louis, 26 January 2021 – Mauritius launches its Covid-19 vaccination programme today giving priority to frontliners including health care professionals, employees of the tourism industry as well as senior citizens and those with underlying medical conditions. 50,000 front liners are being considered for the vaccination campaign with 50% of them being in the tourism sector. Government objective remains the restart of the tourism sector in the safest conditions possible.

Mauritius observes strictest Covid-19 protocols and is regarded as having one of the world’s best responses to the pandemic. Strict quarantine measures and thorough testing protocols have been in place since the outbreak with the hotel industry playing a key role in offering accommodation for confinements. The country received a perfect 100 on the Oxford University Stringency Index which tracks government policy and action regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

There has been little to no disruption of social life in Mauritius since June 2020 with practically no known cases of community transmission. As a result, the country has seen an increase in demand from visitors looking to relocate to a Covid-safe environment for work, leisure, or retirement. The Premium Visa has been introduced for this purpose and allows for extended visits of 12 months with an option for further extensions.

Entry restrictions and quarantine requirements are expected to be eased progressively based on the evolution of the pandemic and upon visitors having achieved immunity. The situation is being closely monitored with vaccination campaigns already started in Mauritius’s main tourism markets. It is expected that soon vaccinated visitors will be granted free access to the country.

The ultimate objective of the vaccination campaign is to inoculate 60% of the country’s population of 1.3 million to achieve herd immunity. The first batch of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, produced by the Serum Institute of India, arrived from Mumbai on Friday 22 January as a donation from the government of India. Doses required to complete the vaccination campaign are expected from Oxford-AstraZeneca and Pfizer with an initial consignment approved through the COVAX facility.

Following the continuous and rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus in UK and South Africa, the following precautionary measures have been adopted by the Mauritian Authorities:

Any person having resided in United Kingdom or South Africa or with a history of travel to and from United Kingdom and South Africa within the last 15 days will not be allowed entry or transit in the Republic of Mauritius until 28th February 2021.

We wish to reassure that all precautionary measures are being taken to protect the residents of Mauritius and other travellers.

18 DECEMBER

The Cabinet took the decision on Friday 18 December 2020 to extend the quarantine period in Mauritius from 15 January 2021 to 15 February 2021. Quarantine will therefore be mandatory for all passengers entering Mauritius until that date. Regulations will be amended accordingly by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

NOTICE TO ALL TRAVELLERS TO MAURITIUS

Updated Communique with regards to the spread of the “new coronavirus” (Covid-2019)

Following the continuous and rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus, the following precautionary measures have been adopted by the Mauritian Authorities:

All travelers who come from or have been in transit in the following countries during the last 14 days will not be allowed to enter the Mauritian territory until 28th February 2021:
- UK
- South Africa
- Japan
- Brazil

We wish to reassure that all precautionary measures are being taken to protect the residents of Mauritius and other travellers.

All prospective passengers (including children and infants) travelling to Mauritius must possess the following documents:

a certificate of a negative COVID – 19 PCR test administered between 5 and 7 days prior to the date of boarding at the last point of embarkation.
a valid air ticket to Mauritius; and
proof of purchase of a travel package including accommodation, on a full board basis, at a designated hotel for a mandatory 14-day in-room quarantine.

Attention is also drawn to the fact that

any arriving passenger will have to undergo PCR tests on day of arrival, day 7 and day 14 following arrival: and
if a PCR test reveals that a person is COVID-19 positive, he shall be transferred to a public medical institution for treatment.
Non-Mauritians must pay a fee of Rs13,500 per person to their hotel to cover for Ministry of Health costs (including three PCR tests administered in Mauritius) when purchasing their travel package.

Incoming passengers to Mauritius must download and fill their Public Health Covid-19 Passenger Health Self-Declaration Form and Passenger Locator Form which must be handed over to the Ministry of Health and Wellness counters upon their arrival.
